Why Do Nipples Stay Hard After Breast Implants?

Breast implants are a way to increase the size of your breasts, alter their shape, or reconstruct your breasts and help you to regain body confidence after undergoing invasive surgery such as a mastectomy.

There are many positives to undergoing a procedure that will change the size and/or shape of your breasts, but sometimes you can be left with questions about the surgery.

Undergoing cosmetic surgery can be a physically and emotionally trying time, so when the results of the procedure are not what you were expecting, it can be easy to think about worst-case scenarios.

Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors is here to put your mind at ease post-breast augmentation surgery.

One of the most common questions that people have about breast augmentation is how the procedure may affect the size, shape and position of their nipples.

In some cases, patients are looking to address a cosmetic concern related to their nipples as part of their breast enhancement procedure, whereas in others, patients are looking for as little change as possible.

Whichever may be the case for you, the following facts about nipples and breast enhancement will be able to give you a more informed idea of what to expect post-surgery.

Nipple hardness

Nipple hardness should not change with a breast augmentation procedure. This means that if your nipples were firm before the surgery, they should continue to be this way afterwards.

If your nipples were somewhat prominent to start with, they might have the illusion of being more prominent after surgery, as the implants now push them further outward.

Nipple sensitivity is common after breast augmentation. However, this sensitivity should usually return to normality by four to six weeks after surgery.

By six weeks, the nipples are to be expected to not be uncomfortably hard and raised but to have returned to their original state.

It is very common to have unusual feelings and sensations on or around your nipples after surgery. Your body will be sensitive as it heals, and anywhere with concentrated nerve endings will feel much more sensitive than usual.

If your nipples still feel sensitive and hard for more than six weeks post-surgery, talk to your cosmetic surgeon for advice.

Nipple shape

Breast augmentation combined with a breast lift can alter the shape and size of your nipples and areolae (the darker pigmented areas of skin that surround your nipples).

For some, large or asymmetrical areolae are a cosmetic concern that they would like to resolve as part of their enhancement procedure.

While augmentation alone does not generally cover this, adding a breast lift to this process can alter their size and/or shape of nipples should you want to.

Women who intend to breastfeed are advised against this particular part of the procedure until they have completed their families, as altering the size and shape of your nipples can affect your likelihood of being able to breastfeed.

Inverted nipples

Inverted, or retracted, nipples are often genetic, but can also be caused by injury or trauma. During breast augmentation, it is possible for your surgeon to rectify this for you.

Generally, your surgeon will be able to make a small incision through which they can turn your nipple outward. Let your surgeon know if this is something you are interested in prior to the procedure.

Breastfeeding

As mentioned previously, the ability to breastfeed after breast augmentation can be affected during the procedure. If being able to breastfeed after getting implants is something that is important to you, be sure to mention this to your surgeon in your consultation.

The peri-areolar incision can be avoided when this is the case in order to minimise the chances of interfering with nipple and duct function.
