Survey results:
how much money do men and women spend on their appearance every year?
In July 2019, we ran a national survey asking the British public to tell us how much they spent every year on their appearance on items such as clothing, hair products, gym membership and jewellery.
When the results came in, we discovered that British men who splurged regularly on their appearance outspent their female counterparts by as much as £600.

How did we analyse the data?
The below methodology was used to work out the results of the ‘How much do you spend on your appearance?’ survey by Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors, July 2019.
The example we will use is to explain how we found this result:
“Male fitness enthusiasts spend between £468 and £707 every year on gym membership and exercise classes.’
To find out the total amount that was spent in each year by men who pay for a gym membership and/or exercise classes, we first multiplied the number of men per the lowest and highest value in each price range:
E.g. Ten men said they spend between £10 and 24 per month, so the minimum amount of money this group could have spent was £100 (ten men x £10) and the maximum amount they could have spent was £240 (ten men x £24).
E.g. 16 men said they spend between £25 and 49 per month, so the minimum amount of money this group could have spent was £400 (16 men x £25) and the maximum amount they could have spent was £784 (16 men x £49).
We did this for each of the price ranges detailed in the table above.
We then added up all of the minimum amounts for each price range to get the total minimum amount that all men could have spend on exercise in one month:
- The minimum amount spent in the month was £1,834
We then added up all of the maximum amounts for each price range to get the total maximum amount that all men could have spend on exercise in one month:
- The maximum amount spent in the month was £2,770
To find the average amount spent per man per month, we divided these two amounts by the number of men who answered this question in the survey, (47 out of 145 men):
- The minimum average amount spent in the month was £39 (£1,834 / 47)
- The minimum average amount spent in the month was £59 (£2,770 / 47)
To find the average amount spent per man who pays for a gym membership and/or exercise classes per year, we then multiplied these two amounts by 12, to get:
- The minimum average amount spent in the year on exercise was £468
- The maximum average amount spent in the year on exercise was £707
